What does 3G mean (and other acronyms)

I was wondering what "3G" meant in all the cell phone commercials ("on the worlds fastest 3G network.."). So I googled "define 3G network" and found out that it means "Third Generation". Well that makes since. The First Generation was analog, when people carried around huge bags for their phone. The Second Generation was the switch to digital and smaller and smaller handsets. Now the Third Generation is high speed digital which let's us add internet surfing and broader bandwidths for video

What other acronyms do you wonder about? The computing industry is full of them. The next time you hear some letters, look them up with the "define" keyword in Google and tell us what it means.

I've been wondering what 3G meant also, but that just sounds like a way for the industry to sell an entirely new product. Of course "3G" phones have improvements over previous cells, but it's an upgraded version, not a new one.

There is indeed an acronym overdose these days. Some of them them that come to my mind are anything high-def related. Although self-explanitory, HD-DVD is/was tossed around quite a lot. Even CD-ROM.

I recently have been looking to get a new phone and it seems that every cell phone company's new phones are advertised as 3G. For example At@t's new phones on their website are all advertised as being 3G, whatever that means...

My new AT&T touch screen is on the 3G network. The cell phone companies don't lie, browsing the internet with this phone is almost three times as fast as any of my previous phones.
