Two recent technologies have really got me to thinking. Read and comment on either below, or go out on a limb a think about what changes this might mean.
1. A web resource called BilltoMobile allows anyone with a cell phone (YES, a basic cell phone works) to be able to charge digital purchases to their cell phone bill via their cell phone. No need to use carry credit online anymore. Just charge purchases to your phone. Read more here.
2. QR Codes (or Quick Response Codes) are 2 dimensional bar codes that can be interpreted by your cell phones camera as a url link. You simply take a picture and your mobile web browser goes to the intended web site. Read more here.
This takes the term "window shopping" to a whole new level. Imagine seeing something you'd like to have, maybe clothes your friend has on or a video game advertised in a magazine. You could just QR the barcode and pay for it with your cell phone. 3 days later it appears in the mailbox!

That sounds like a cool idea with the barcode thing, but if kids just mass scan everything they want, it could prove troublesome for their parents. If they make a security system to ask parents' permission before finalizing purchases, I think that it'd work out.
It seems good in theory but lots if good ideas turn out bad...look at socialism. Kids could buy things left and right and it could get out of hand.
I agree with Evan H. Kids these days are so caught up in buying the newest things; they want everything as long as they dont have to pay for it. Kids have no respect for their parents or their parents money. But having parents finalize all purchases would work.
The idea of using the barcode is a good idea as long as it is used responsibly. Maybe it needs to be modified so if a kid tries to make a purchase their parent can be alerted and has to approve of the purchase. This feature could be optional, depending on how much the parent trusts their kids.
And Matt, this DOES NOT relate to SOCIALISM. If you really think it does could you please elaborate more?
I like the idea of using your cell phone basically like a credit card. But children could go over board and end up making alot of debt for their parents. So i agree with Evan that their should be some type of parental control over such a system.
Sam the socialism thing is that some ideas look good in planning but turn out horrible like socialism.
That makes more sense now Matt. This idea doesn't look like it will be that horrible in the end. This idea isn't that bad, it just needs some restrictions.
I agree with basically everyone so far. I think this would be a good idea as long as the proper restrictions are set.
I think that since many kids have cell phones they could easily start to buy to many things. A budget would have to be set by the family.
I think it is a great idea if you take the appropiate measures to make sure it works correctly. You dont want your kids buying everything that they possibly can it. IF there is a way to make the cell phone have a limit then your kids could only buy things within that limit.
