from Time Magazine...
"Using Facebook photos as evidence, police in South Burlington, Vt., have charged a high school athlete with possession of alcohol - the second time in a year they used the website to make an underage bust. In June girls on the high school lacrosse team were ratted out by online pictures. The town's chief of police says his officers don't surf social-networking sites. In both cases parents first pointed out the photos."

I personally think that police or school searching facebook just to try to bust underage drinking is dumb. As Americans, we're supposed to have some kind of rights towards searches without probable cause. I know that facebook is a website open to the public, but i don't think they should go out of their way to get people in trouble.
I think that the police searching facebook to bust underage drinking is a good thing because their job is to keep the streets safe. i think the parents should get involved also to keep their children from making wrong choices in life and to prevent them from drinking and driving causing serious accidents thats killing their love ones.
well the unintended consquences are the fact when u put a picture on places like facebook and myspace and stuff u are showing everyone what you look like and other info. and some perfert could find almost exactly where u live and wat school and what u look like.and the legal issues that could come up are the fact that if you doing something if the had permission to look at your facebook it would be okay. but if they just looking at it with out your permission it could be illegal cause its YOUR facebook not theirs and they shouldnt be allowed to look with out permission. and parents sometimes just thing there is something wrong when there is abslutly nothing wrong. our generation is not a generation that sits around in the back of class on facebook because we Cant!!!
that was smart on the cops part to use that site to catch him and dumb on the kids part for ever even doing that
I believe that searching facebook for underage drinking is a good idea. If cops can catch kids drinking it can help keep everyone safe. The only down side is though that someone could have easily used photoshop put your face next to can alcholic beverage. Then up load it to facebook and have the police think you were drinking when you may have not even been there in the first PLACE!
i think the police shouldn't look on these web pages, because it's waisting time for them. they have more important stuff to do. and i think that parents shouldn't either go to them, because these web pages like facebook are specially for children.
I dont think its right if the police go on the web just to try to get photos of underage people drinking, but if parents bring them the photos in then its okay. The kids shouldn't be that dumb for drinking in the first place let alone then posting it on the web.
I think it is a good way to bust kids for under age drinking if you want your friends on facebook to think your cool by putting pictures of you drinking on there then you arent very smart.
Once photos appear on the internet they pretty much beconme public domain and they are in open for any one to view. THe pictures posted on Facebook once posted are for everyone to view. If Police get reports of something on the internet they are obligated to respond. If sugestive or inapropriate material is on Youtube and someone informs them it is removed it is sort of the same thing.
Good i like the fact that the cops are actually looking at the stuff we put on the internet. it helps me feel safe that they are there. also it is kind of scary because they see what you look like and the kind of dumb stuff you do on a friday or saturday night.
I do not believe it is fair for the police to make arrests based on pictures found on the internet simply because it is so easy to fake. Photoshop is easily available and people who are acually skilled with the software could easily make a convincing photo. Police should be using this information though, the same way they would with an anyonomous tip: by using the information to catch the suspect in the act.
I think that teachers and schools that look at peoples facebooks are invading our privacy. I also think that they do not have a right to look at students personal spaces.
I think that people should be careful about what they put on facebook or myspace.
People shouldn't post anything that they wouldn't want people to see, especially anything a little less than legal. Just the same, it's quite obsessive for businesses to search Facebook for details on an employee, but if they have the time and resources, more power to them. Facebook’s not intended for users to censor their info., but as far as comments and photos go, just be careful what you (and your friend’s) upload. If you’re always partying in your spare time, keep that to yourself.
I beleive that people shouldbe able to post whatever they want. If your going to post things like that then your doing it at your own risk. Some people who previous posted in this blog said that the plice shouldnt be able to look at facebook photos when in fact if you read the original post it said that they cops do not go surfing for underage drinking, it was the parents. Therefor you should do what you want to do but do it with your own risk
